On the 22nd July 2001 we opened our garden for the first
time for the National Garden Scheme. It was suggested we might get about 50 to 60
visitors through the gate.
The morning was very showery and we thought our cake making and raising of
plants for sale would all be in vain, by twelve o'clock, the rain had stopped
and the sun was peeping from behind the cloud.
Two o'clock arrived and nobody was waiting at the gate, by five past the first
three visitors arrived, at least somebody had arrived.
By half past two the back garden was filled almost to capacity, teas and cake
were being served as fast as possible and the plant stall was extremely busy as
well.
We had put in new labels for the more unusual and visual plants, as the
originals had been in the garden for many years, and had got 'lost', and names
forgotten.
Lots of questions were asked including, "How do you keep your grass so
green" and "What do you feed your plants with".
Happy friendly visitors who were obviously enjoying themselves, gave a garden
party atmosphere. The few seats for teas were filled as soon as they were
vacated.
We received many complimentary remarks about the garden and plants, and indeed
the cakes.
At five o'clock we had sold the 162nd ticket, for entry to the garden.
The afternoon had been a great success and had exceeded our expectations.
We would like to thank our friends Cyril , Audrey and Betty for helping
in the kitchen and on the Gate.
